We could use your enthusiasm to assist us in spreading the word about
Democracy Now! at the San Francisco Green Festival. Volunteers will sell
DN! merchandise, talk to people about the importance of independent
media, and generally be the DN! presence at the event. Let me know if
you're available for a shift (or two). If you don't already have one,
you'll get a free t-shirt.

* French Journalist Henri Alleg Describes His Torture Being Waterboarded by
French Forces During Algerian War *
Three crucial members of the Senate Judiciary Committee said this weekend
they would back the nomination of Attorney General hopeful Michael Mukasey
despite his refusal to condemn waterboarding as a form of torture. Henri
Alleg, an 86-year-old journalist subjected to waterboarding by French troops
during the war for Algerian independence, says no civilized country should
allow it.

* Assassination of Tamil Leader Prompts Fears of Escalated Sri Lankan Civil
War *
The decades-long civil war between the predominantly Sinhalese government
and Tamil rebels has taken a sharp turn for the worse. A Tamil leader was
killed Friday with five of his associates in an air strike by the Sri Lankan
military. Analysts suggest this could be the beginning of a return to a
full-scale war. We speak to Sri Lankan Tamil democracy activist Ahilan
Kadirgamar.
