What Belly Dancing Taught Me
about Personal Branding

I'm learning to belly dance.

Okay, that's totally overstating it. I'm wiggling to music in what is labeled a belly dancing class.

I've found that I enjoy the constant movement, manipulating my limbs and taking any excuse I can to be silly. But more fun than the belly dancing is the instructor.

She loves this stuff. Her eyes light up when she enters the room, her voice changes pitch, and she hops around throwing out euphemisms that make even the bravest people blush. She's a complete fruit loop. And she's loved for it. It's her schtick.

Or, in marketing terms, it's her personal brand.

Oh no, not another post about personal branding

We've been hearing about personal brands ad nauseum for the past year. Even if you're not sure why you need one, you're certain that you do. It's like a 401k. Or a spouse.

The trouble is, most personal brands make everybody else want to jab forks straight into their eyes. They're based on egos, false promises, and personalities so obnoxious that you'd never be friends with this person in real life.

But as my belly dancing instructor has taught me, you don't have to build a personal brand on being an egomaniac. You can build your brand on simply being human. Or better yet, you can build your brand on being your favorite version of yourself.

How do you create a personal brand that will garner attention instead of hate? Here are some tips I've picked up from my experience on the Web.

And belly dancing.

Claim your niche

My belly dancing instructor doesn't teach the hip hop class that takes place after her session. Nor does she teach the weekend kickboxing class. She's limited herself to belly dancing because she knows that's where she can offer the greatest value.

Trying to teach everything would undermine what she's about and the tribe she's looking to attract. She sticks to what she does better than anyone else.

Think niche. You can't be known for everything. Pick what's most important to what you do, break it down to its simplest core, and be it.

While Copyblogger has established itself as one of the Web's top resources on content, Brian Clark has branded himself the master of headlines. It's a tiny microcosm of the whole content creation space that he owns. It's where he's untouchable.

Create your character

Like I said, my instructor is a fruit loop. The moment you think you've seen everything, she ups the ridiculousness.

She tears her sweats so you can watch her legs curl, and refers to body parts in ways you wish you could erase from your mind. She knows who she needs to be to attract the right audience, and she plays up her quirks to do so. She builds a tribe that falls in love not only with her class, but with her. It becomes so that the class and brand are so intertwined that you can't tell them apart.

Lots of people will tell you to "be yourself" in social media. I'd advise creating a persona that mixes who you are and who you want to be. This heightened version of yourself allows you to lose the performance anxiety and magnify the personality traits needed to attract the right people.

We fall in love with those who are brave enough to do what we think we can't. As long as you're basing your character off who you really are, you'll be able to keep it authentic and still look great naked.

Treat people like humans

My instructor has been dancing for longer than I've been an adult. She's trained in moves and styles that my stiff body can't even comprehend.

But you wouldn't know that by talking to her. She's unassuming and talks to you like you're old friends meeting up for coffee. And she keeps that tone even when instruction has begun. There's no jargon to confuse us, no making things complicated so we feel dumb and she wouldn't dare call herself an "expert" or a "guru." She's just someone who loves belly dancing and is excited about the opportunity to share it with us.

Finding your voice and using it to be relatable is what will make or break your personal brand. It's what separates the brands we love from the brands we wish would die.

It's all about your ability to talk to people in a genuine way and show them that you're one of them. This is where most people get tripped up. We elevate ourselves thinking that it makes us more impressive and authoritative and that our audience will trust us more. Truthfully, all this does is alienate you from the people you're trying to connect with.

Figure out what the real you sounds like, and then use that voice to be real with others. You can't fake this.

Make your brand accessible

My instructor shows up to class early. She stays late. She takes questions in the middle of instruction and will show and re-show certain movements until you've nailed them. Her email address is publicly available so that students can email her with questions. She has an email newsletter to help us stay in contact with not only her, but one another.

She's not teaching a class, she's creating a community.

When you make your brand accessible, you help it grow beyond your niche. Become part of your community. Answer questions. Lift up those who are doing well. Share trusted information. Look for ways to extend your brand through blogging, guest postings [cough], email newsletters, and direct mail.

Everything that you put out should incorporate and promote your personal brand. The more people see you and your tribe, the more they'll gravitate toward it. It's social proof.

Your personal brand is you. It's who you are, what you believe, and what you want to put out there to others.

Use the social tools available to be you as loudly as you can, while always offering a benefit to those around you. Your personal brand may be all about you, but it's also about how you make others feel.

It's emotional DNA, and what separates the personal brands we love from those we love to tear apart.

Drawing the Line Between Lawyering and Lobbying

The recent hubbub about the "Al Qaeda 7" -- Department of Justice lawyers who, while in private practice, represented Guantanamo detainees -- spurred a massive debate, nominally about legal ethics and national security. The legal community seems to have come down largely on the side of the attorneys, ripping Liz Cheney and others who question the loyalty of these now-public servants. Lawyers, we're told, understand their ethical obligations, and should not be barred from government work simply because they previously represented clients who kind of hate the government.

Walter Olson, at Point of Law, ponders the significance of this opinion vis-a-vis the hybrid firms that exist in Washington (and elsewhere). Josh Gerstein had a piece at Politico last week questioning the different treatment of lawyers and lobbyists. Lobbyists, under current federal rules, must observe a two-year "cooling off period" before the taint of their prior activities is considered to have abated.

Overlawyered linked today to a site called singlepayerlegal.org. And it's amusing. So I sure hope that Overlawyered's determination that it must be nothing more than parody/satire is correct.

The premise is the flip side of the argument for a single-payer health care system. The article (PDF) linked to on the front page of the site, written by a Matthew S. Rice, M.D., and apparently published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, makes clear that the concept is: A little bit of "turnabout is fair play":

Nicole Wong, a quien tuve el gusto de conocer cuando pasó por IE Business School el pasado 3 de noviembre junto con Peter Fleischer (uno de los directivos de Google injusta y absurdamente condenados en Italia), compareció por quinta vez el pasado día 10 de marzo ante la Cámara de Representantes del Congreso de los Estados Unidos, e incluyó a España en una lista de países que aplican la censura sobre Internet. Específicamente, Nicole afirmó que

In the last two years, we have received reports that our blogging platform has been or is being blocked in at least seven countries China, Spain, India, Pakistan, Iran, Myanmar and Ethiopia.

En el caso de España, Google España ha afirmado que Nicole hacía referencia al caso específico de dos blogs que, en el año 2007, fueron cerrados por orden judicial por pedir el boicot a productos catalanes. Pero indudablemente, la cosa va mucho más allá: no debemos olvidar que en nuestro país se está tramitando un Anteproyecto de Ley de Economía Sostenible en el que existe una Disposición Final Primera que atenta claramente contra los derechos fundamentales y la libertad de expresión, y que puede ser utilizada para cerrar páginas web mediante una simple acusación de vulneración de la propiedad intelectual. Hablamos de un país en el que una coalición industrial que ya ha mostrado en numerosas ocasiones su carácter liberticida y su pretensión de transmutar a nuestro país en una sucursal de China, demuestra tener tanto poder como para modificar las leyes durante su tramitación, colando de rondón lo que buenamente les viene en gana sin ningún tipo de control.

Es muy posible que lo que Nicole pueda estar recogiendo en su declaración no sea únicamente el caso del cierre de los blogs anticatalanes en 2007, sino el clima adverso al desarrollo de las libertades en la red que se está generando en España: una serie de lobbies presionando al gobierno, interfiriendo indebidamente en la tramitación de leyes, operando en régimen de monopolio, y "sacando a los artistas a la calle" para obtener prebendas del Legislativo. El hecho de que España ocupe la Presidencia rotatoria de la Unión Europea y el que haya declarado su intención de desarrollar una metodología que pueda extrapolarse al resto de Europa convierte las tentaciones censoras de nuestro gobierno en algo todavía más preocupante.

Lo que es seguro es que, con las declaraciones de Nicole en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, muchos congresistas y ciudadanos norteamericanos y de todo el mundo piensan ahora en España y evocan los famosos sketches de Monty Python, esos en los que nadie esperaba a una torpe y risible Inquisición española. Esa es la imagen que nuestro gobierno, con una política sobre Internet completamente mediatizada por los lobbies de la industria intermediaria de los derechos de autor, ha conseguido que tengamos. No, que la empresa líder mundial en Internet te ponga en una lista junto con países como China, Inida, Pakistán, Myanmar, Irán y Etiopía no es nada, nada bueno, y si alguien cree que esto ha sido "un lamentable error", como se pretende argumentar desde Google España mientras se trata desesperadamente de nadar y guardar la ropa, está muy equivocado. Aquí no se da puntada sin hilo. Mucho cuidado, Google España: lo de nadar y guardar la ropa se está convirtiendo en un ejercicio muy peligroso. Primero, porque no puede ser y además es imposible: o se nada, o se guarda la ropa. Y segundo, porque cuando llegue el momento, no va a haber nadie que os ayude con ninguna de las dos cosas.

En lugar de dedicarnos a redefinir el papel y el valor de la propiedad intelectual en el nuevo entorno que las tecnologías definen, en vez de favorecer el desarrollo de la cultura española y de intentar convertir su tratamiento en referente mundial, estamos atentando contra la naturaleza de Internet, siguiendo el dictado de las industrias del pasado, y haciendo patéticamente el ridículo a nivel internacional.

The Commercialization Challenge: PROFITS Principles, Flexibility

Many people become entrepreneurs and start their own companies because of the 'freedom' they desire.  Others, who do not want the responsibility of company ownership, yet crave the idea of a small, congenial environment, also choose to work in small companies.  These companies promise to fulfill an easy flowing work environment without the bureaucracy and tedious approval layers of larger corporations.

In the biofuels arena, as in other smaller enterprises, less financial resources and fewer expert functions result in a 'commercialization challenge' after the research and electronic drawings and renditions of what could be, reach the economy of scalability phase.  In your kitchen, preparing a dinner for twenty may not require more time than cooking for twelve.  However, in your business, this difference very likely requires more demands on farmers, producers and transport agreements.

Your innovative biofuels company requires Flexibility. The types of flexibility we address here require two types of actions that may sometimes seem to be in conflict:

• Design flexible financial strategies
• Design structured processes

"Flexibility is a creative flow and is not encumbered by rules…There is a lack of control and discipline.  Things organize naturally, without effort.  New ideas surface.  People build on each other's thoughts and adapt to the current reality.  Creativity has free reign."  Some of these definitions sound almost romantic, This may be surprising, considering they evolved in a discussion in a business class.

Design flexible financial strategies

To be effective, there must be some structure when practicing flexibility. Yet not one person in the business class included the words processes, discipline, boundaries or planning in their definition.  Unbounded, uncontrolled and undisciplined flexibility is not flexibility at all.  It is chaos.  Anyone who works for any company for any length of time can cite many examples of the phenomenon I'll call 'flexibility chaos.'

Saavy early-stage companies piece together unique funding strategies and forge powerful partnerships to reach their goals.  The 'Valley of Death', the between the time a startup settles on a technical approach and commercializes a pilot project is the 'do or die' time for a biofuels business.

A new startup must keep ahead of the competition. Fortunately, the government and your competition want success and growth in the biofuels industry too.  The Environmental Protection Agency proposed the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and approved production of cellulosic biofuels starting in 2010, growing to 16 billion gallons by 2022 (more than 10 percent of the transportation fuel pool).

To achieve that high hurdle, biofuels related companies must execute their technologies into the commercialization phase.  Lab successes can be obliterated in this phase by the competitive realities of the commercialization/scalability process.

Clarify your priorities and goals

It is critical to determine your priorities and goals.  Do you want to build, own, operate, manufacture or sell your technology?  Do you want to license, purchase enzymes, partner with growers, become a strategic partner?  Qteros, for example, chose to consolidate the processes for separating sugars from biomass and fermentation. Their enzyme demonstrates the ability to reduce bioprocessing costs by 40 percent, through decreased capital and process outlays.  This is where they choose to focus their energy.

Funding

Loan vehicles to fund and build demonstration plants are difficult to find, especially since the summer of 2008.  The most profitable companies piece together a conglomerate of companies, many of whom are their own investors. This is a creative method for reducing risk along the value chain.  It also creates independence and equity stakes for owners who do not want to be beholden to potential investors.  Commitment is high in these companies.

And, once a company demonstrates success, finding funding becomes much easier.  "We have actually been able to accelerate everything we've done because we've had good partners," says Verenium's CEO, William Baum. Verenium partnered with BP to become Vercipia Biofuels, with the goal of producing 36 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol by 2012 in its commercial pilot. Partnerships also create operational as well as  financial opportunities.  Vercipia is taking advantage of a Florida Farm to Fuel grant, and it was the first cellulosic project selected under the U.S. Energy Department's Title XVII loan guarantee program for innovative technology.

Creating alliances and partnerships aligns your product with producers.  David Steward of Citrus Energy, Inc. has an alliance with Southern Gardens Citrus to obtain citrus peels for a time in the future when he will obtain funding for commercialization.  Lining up alliances in advance of production ensures that commercialization can begin as soon as the funds arrive.

Mitigate risks

Jim Imbler, CEO and President of ZeaChem talks about risk mitigation.  "Anticipating and alleviating risk whenever possible is the winning strategy for this successful CEO and his company.  As global competitive pressure increases and product life cycles compress, companies are trying to shorten product development cycle times. Product development cycle times increase with increased product complexity and with product newness.

Other factors effecting financial flexibility

Some of the other important factors that determine how successful companies create their funding strategy include determining priorities for capital efficiency, time to market, exit prospects, competitive landscape, industry expectations, market conditions, policy/regulatory environment, geographic location and other investors.

Design structured processes

From new business starts to product development in large companies, chaos can reign across a range of business situations.  For some companies, order may organically evolve from experience and the repetition of repeated work procedures.  Creating order varies for each company and depends upon projects and expertise.  Many times functions do not work together.  Finance doesn't consult with marketing about pricing.  Operations may not communicate with sales.  Salespeople are out in the field making promises to customers without engineering or operations validating the probability of delivering on those promises.

Making it up as you go along, without coordination among the moving parts of the business, what some may call "flexibility," is a recipe for disaster.

How can your management team develop creative, adaptive and thoughtful responses to new circumstances?  How can you alleviate most of the chaos in your business?  A well-engineered process can address potential chaos and provide the knowledge that offers direction.  Knowing what's expected can help you sail through unexpected market shifts may disrupt that frequently interrupt well-designed strategies. It is always important to have a plan.  Yet, it's important to maintain flexibility and not always regiment your business to strictly follow every detail of your plan.  It is not a contradiction to say that a well-designed plan with specific details reminds you where you are going and demonstrates a well-grounded thinking process and still remain receptive and open to changing your plan based on market conditions and customer needs.

The Concepción–Constitución area [35–37◦S] in South Central Chile is very likely a mature seismic gap,

since no large subduction earthquake has occurred there since 1835. Three campaigns of global positioning

system (GPS) measurements were carried out in this area in 1996, 1999 and 2002. We observed

a network of about 40 sites, including two east–west transects ranging from the coastal area to the

Argentina border and one north–south profile along the coast. Our measurements are consistent with

the Nazca/South America relative angular velocity (55.9◦N, 95.2◦W, 0.610◦/Ma) discussed by Vigny et al.

(2008, this issue) which predicts a convergence of 68mm/year oriented 79◦N at the Chilean trench near

36◦S. With respect to stable South America, horizontal velocities decrease from 45mm/year on the coast

to 10mm/year in the Cordillera. Vertical velocities exhibit a coherent pattern with negative values of

about 10mm/year on the coast and slightly positive or near zero in the Central Valley or the Cordillera.

Horizontal velocities have formal uncertainties in the range of 1–3mm/year and vertical velocities around

3–6mm/year. Surface deformation in this area of South Central Chile is consistent with a fully coupled

elastic loading on the subduction interface at depth. The best fit to our data is obtained with a dip of 16±3◦,

a locking depth of 55±5 km and a dislocation corresponding to 67mm/year oriented 78◦N. However in

the northern area of our network the fit is improved locally by using a lower dip around 13◦. Finally a

convergence motion of about 68mm/year represents more than 10mof displacement accumulated since

the last big interplate subduction event in this area over 170 years ago (1835 earthquake described by Darwin).

Therefore, in a worst case scenario, the area already has a potential for an earthquake of magnitude

as large as 8–8.5, should it happen in the near future.

Twin Brother of Woman's Lover Seeks New Trial in 'Mistake Sex' Case

"Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God," she said, grabbing her clothes. "I thought you were your brother."

Straight out of what looks like a bad criminal law final exam comes this story from the Toronto Star (via Bad Lawyer) about a woman who claims she unwittingly had sex with the twin brother of her "occasional lover." The twin brother was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to six months in jail for the September 2006 incident, but he is now asking an appellate court to grant him a new trial.

The Star reports that the woman had a sexual relationship with the brother of the accused, and she would stay at his apartment whenever she visited the area. On the night in question, the woman and the accused drove to a liquor store where they each bought a bottle of red wine. The accused twin brother says they became intoxicated and the woman "became flirty." Later, the accused felt sleepy, and his brother recommended he sleep in the bedroom. He saw the woman sleeping in bed, and says he didn't think it would be awkward if they shared the bed. "I thought we were all pretty good friends," he testified.

Old Law Books Are Not Garbage, They're Art

With each passing year, the relevance and need for physical law books seems to diminish a bit more. I haven't spent enough time in law firms lately to know where we are in this slow spiral into obsolescence, but I know the day is coming and books are slowly being disposed of.

It seems somewhat ironic to me that the blog post underlying this discussion comes from a law library, but the WisBlawg of the University of Wisconsin School of Law maintains a running list of clever uses for old books (other than reading them, of course). These include:

THE mood in Chile over the past few days has swung as violently as buildings did in the early hours of February 27th. The terror of the massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake—so intense that many still cannot bear to talk about it—quickly turned to relief, at least in the capital, Santiago, which escaped relatively unscathed. That was tribute to the quality of the country's building standards. Even the sheet-glass of modern office and apartment blocks was unbroken, despite the alarming swaying they suffered. But farther south, where the devastation and disorder was much more severe, anger set in.

By March 3rd the deaths of over 800 people had been confirmed, but officials said that several hundred remained missing. Worst hit were a string of towns and villages on the coast either side of Concepción, the country's second city, as well as the remote Juan Fernández islands. The earthquake triggered several giant waves that swept away thousands of houses. The victims included fishermen and farm workers—some of Chile's poorest people—as well as campers and backpackers who had been enjoying the last week of the country's summer holidays.

The government seemed slow to react. Long accustomed to natural disasters, Chile has plenty of emergency food rations, but aid started to reach the hardest-hit regions only three days after the quake. By then looting was widespread in Concepción, a city of 600,000 people. A local official talked of a "social earthquake".

Shaking Chileans' image of themselves as a law-abiding people, the pillaging affected not only supermarkets but also department stores, with looters taking things, such as plasma televisions, that hunger or cold could not excuse. In response, President Michelle Bachelet declared the regions of Bío-Bío and Maule "catastrophe zones" and sent 10,000 troops to keep order—the first time the army has been thus used since Chile returned to democracy in 1990. A curfew and patrols by troops seemed to curb much of the anarchy.

Officials admit that they made mistakes. The most serious was the national emergency office's early assurance that there was no risk of a tsunami (it misplaced the quake's epicentre as being on land). The government's slow response and failure to maintain order were partly caused by its reliance not on old-fashioned radios, but on the internet and mobile telephones—both of which were knocked out by a power failure. For the first seven hours the government thus had no information about conditions south of Santiago. At first it was ambivalent about calling for international help.

Ms Bachelet has been a popular and successful president, but she is due to hand over power on March 11th, bringing to an end 20 years of rule by the centre-left Concertación. It will fall to Sebastián Piñera, a centre-right businessman who won January's presidential election, to lead the reconstruction. He will inherit an economy in which a recovery from recession has been abruptly cut short by widespread destruction to roads, ports and businesses.

Eqecat, a risk-modelling company in California, won itself publicity with an instant assessment that the earthquake could have caused $15-30 billion in damage, or up to 20% of Chile's GDP. That is a guess, since companies are still counting the cost. The forestry industry, which accounts for around 8% of exports and is centred in the worst-hit regions, may be shut down for at least a month because of damage to factories and to transport links, says Charles Kimber of Arauco, a big forestry firm. Winemakers, concentrated between Maule and Santiago, suffered too. At some vineyards, storage tanks split open.

The government is faced with restoring roads and ports, building 500,000 new homes and repairing 1m others that were damaged. It can draw on some $11 billion in a sovereign fund, most of it saved by Ms Bachelet's government from windfall revenues from copper exports. Mr Piñera has a big job on his hands.

Via this post on the (new) legal writer blog, I found this detailed analysis of "E-Mail Netiquette for Lawyers" by Judge Gerald Lebovits of the New York City Civil Court, Housing Part, in Manhattan. It's not immediately clear to me why a judge on the New York City Civil Court, Housing Part, would be a particular expert on e-mail etiquette for lawyers, but I thought there were a lot of good points in Judge Lebovits' article -- which originally appeared in the New York State Bar Association Journal -- particularly the reminders on the absence of "tone" and on the need for brevity.

Am Law 100 Firm Launches Own iPhone App

The Am Law 100 law firm Arnold & Porter has launched its own iPhone application. The free app enables users to read the firm's Consumer Advertising Law Blog on their iPhones.

An e-mail I received from the firm said, "As far as we know, Arnold & Porter is one of the only Am Law 100 firms to offer a mobile or iPhone application." I would take that one step further. From what I could find, it is the first and only Am Law 100 firm with its own iPhone app.

In fact, I could find only two other law firms of any size with their own apps. One is the New York immigration firm Spar & Bernstein, which introduced an app in December that provides a feed of the firm's news, Twitter posts, podcasts and videos. The other is the Arizona law firm Harper Law, which has an app named Harper Law that provides a feed of articles with titles such as "Looking for a Phoenix Lawyer?" and "How Much is My Case Worth?"

(No doubt, I'll soon hear from all the other firms with iPhone apps that I overlooked Bring 'em on! Let us know about others in the comments below.)

The Arnold & Porter app is similar to an RSS reader except that it delivers only the one blog's posts. The app allows the user to sort the posts by categories and mark posts as favorites. Posts can easily be shared by e-mail or on Facebook and Twitter. The touch of a button opens the actual blog page in the iPhone's browser.

Given that other RSS readers are available for the iPhone that will read any number of blogs, one would have to be a true fan of this blog to want this app. That said, it is a clever idea, well-designed and well-executed.

How the Legal Community Is Helping in Haiti

In the wake of the horrific earthquake that struck Haiti, I wondered whether anyone in the legal community was organizing any relief or fundraising efforts of their own. Last night, I put out a call on Twitter for leads on Haiti relief efforts being organized by law firms or legal groups. I've also searched blogs and the Web. So far, I have not found much, but I am sure there is far more going on and I encourage readers to post any leads they have in the comments below.

One notable measure is the decision by Paul Hastings to donate a generous $100,000 to earthquake relief. As reported by Above the Law, the firm circulated a memo yesterday saying it had made the donation to the earthquake response efforts of Doctors Without Borders. "We chose this organization because its global scope and effectiveness will deliver to the victims in Haiti the immediate assistance they need by providing health care where the local medical infrastructure has been devastated," the memo said. The firm encouraged its staff to make donations of their own.

Thomas M. Finneran, the former speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, was disbarred yesterday for lying under oath in a federal voting rights lawsuit. In ordering the disbarment, the Supreme Judicial Court rejected Finneran's contention that he should be given lighter discipline because his false testimony was unrelated to his practice of law.

We have generally concluded that crimes ... involving interference with the administration of justice generally do not qualify for a lesser sanction on the ground that the lawyer was not representing a client or directly engaged in the practice of law at the relevant time. ... Lawyers in Louisville, Ky., are asking a federal judge to set aside a jury verdict exonerating a police officer in a Taser-related death because they say the jury foreman researched the case on the Internet and used what he found to sway other jurors.

In a Dec. 4 verdict, the jury cleared one officer and was unable to reach a verdict on another, The Courier-Journal reports. Attorneys representing the estate of the victim, Larry Noles, say a juror contacted them and alleged that at least two other jurors, including the foreman, consulted the Web site of Taser International.

Law Shucks reports here that, out of that frighteningly high number, 4,633 were lawyers and 7,563 were staff. The site also points out that as layoffs are notoriously underreported, the actual number of layoffs in 2009 was likely much higher.

'No Frills' Law School Thriving Outside U.S. News Ranking System

Back in October, I wrote about the impact the U.S. News and World Report rankings continue to have on on the behavior of law schools and how many academics now believe the tail of USNWR rankings is wagging the dog of legal education. This is not true everywhere, however. Via this post on Chuck Newton's Third Wave blog, I learned of at least one law school, North Carolina Central University School of Law, that is thriving on its own terms.
