Via the BBC: Chavez opponent rallies followers
The main opposition candidate in Venezuela, Manuel Rosales, has registered his candidacy for Decembers presidential election. He led thousands of his supporters on a march through Caracas to the headquarters of the electoral council to formalise his candidacy.
Mr Rosales is the governor of the oil-rich Zulia state in west Venezuela.
The Venezuelan opposition has proclaimed him its sole candidate to stand against President Hugo Chavez.
The fact that the opposition has managed to coalesce around a given candidate is interestingand it will be interesting to see if that support maintains itself over the next several months.
There is also the question of whether the elections will, in fact, be free and fair. I have my doubts.
